They're baaaackkkk!!!!

The crayfish are back again! Another year of crayfish in 4th grade. This year's are really tiny. Here they are in the tank. They have some rocks to hide under (we moved some for the pic) and some seaweed and elodea to munch on...

Here is a close up of one although it is a little grainy:

And here is a closer pic of some more of them. There are twelve in all - lets hope they all live through the next few week!

Lovely Mitts and Ascot

I decided to make the fingerless mitts I saw on Knit & Crochet Now from episode #222 (Fingerless Beaded Gloves) and Vickie Howell's ascot in matching yarn.

I used Plymouth Wildflower in a lavendar color and pearl beads:

Gluten Free Passover and a recipe!!

Guess what, guess what, guess what?!!! There is now a Gluten Free Matzah that tastes great! I'm serious - it tastes like Cheeze-It crackers! Better than regular matzah by far! Here it is:

Gluten Free Matzah!

This morning, I made fried matzah for breakfast:

Fried matzah!

And here it is plated up:

Plate of fried matzah

A lot of people have asked me how to make fried matzah. I know a lot of people have their own way, but here is my recipe - I've never had any complaints!

~1 egg for every one and a half sheets of matzah (2 eggs for three sheets)

~oil or spray for your pan

Directions:

In a large bowl, mix eggs as though to scramble

Here is where my recipe is different: run the matzah sheets under warm water, then crumble the sheets (or break them) into the bowl with the eggs. You want to make small, bite size pieces.

Mix the egg and matzah mixture until the matzah is very wet with the egg. If you have a lot of egg still left over, add another sheet of matzah (make sure to wet it)

Heat your pan over a medium flame, oiling or spraying to avoid your matzah/eggs from sticking

Dump the whole bowl into the pan and allow to cook, mixing the mixture occasionally to ensure all parts are cooked.

We like ours dry, so I do cook it a while and flip the pieces over, pressing on them until the "hissing" noise of cooking is done.

Add salt and pepper to taste.

Enjoy!! Let me know how yours turns out!

Blue Waves Crochet Blanket Done!

Finally!!! I finished Jarett's blanket. That was the longest crochet project I've ever done. Here is a pic of Jar wearing it proudly while practicing his piano: Jar's blanket at piano Here is a close up of it: Close up of blanket I ended up making it a self fringing blanket by leaving the fringe at the ends when adding new colors and then tying them off together: Fringe on blanket Jarett and I are both very happy with the results! Now.... what should my next project be???

Locks of Love Hair Cutting Day!

Sunday was the official "Locks of Love" hair cutting donation day!! What an exciting time - I ended up cutting his hair myself, believe it or not! My cousin wasn't able to do it and I guess we could have gone to my hairdresser last minute, but we wanted to video tape it and take pics. I looked up how to do it, and off we went! First, I sectioned his hair off into pieces:

Here is a view of the back (you can see Bryan with the video camera):

Next, we started cutting with the shears, but they pulled too much so I switched to scissors. I also put hair bands halfway down and towards the end to really secure his hair well. Here he is halfway there:

Halfway there!

Here he is completely done (with Bandit standing guard by the window in the background):

All gone!

And here is my handsome boy who just completed a wonderful deed to help others:

Here is the bundle of hair that I will mail off to Locks of Love. As you can see, we got quite a bit!

Jarett, I am so proud of you! Words cannot express the love, honor and respect that I feel inside for you. You are a special boy with an extraordinary heart. I admire your compassion for others and hope others strive to learn from your kindness to make this world a better place. Love, Mommy

Saturday Night S'mores!

Saturday night, Jarett thought it would be fun to have a fire. Of course, what fun is a fire if you don't make s'mores? Being gluten free had put a damper on such novelties, but with the arise of all these new gluten free foods, it was easy peasy to find gluten free graham crackers! Jarett tended the fire: Campfire & Smores We lined up our supplies: Smores! And then enjoyed our yummy treat! Mmmm, smore! A good time was had by all!!

Sophomore Dance!

Matt's dance was Friday night. He went with our neighbor, just as friends. Really, they are like brother and sister. It's cute... they made a deal that if neither one had a boyfriend/girlfriend, they would go together. She looked beautiful in her purple dress - I didn't ask her mom for permission to put her picture up and I would feel funny to do so, so I'm only going to post pics of Matt. But, she bought him a tie to match her dress. He looked very handsome and they had a fun time. Enjoy the pics!

Seeds are sprouting!

Part of the fourth grade curriculum is seeds. We've been sprouting and measuring the growth of roots, stems and leaves. I was somehow lucky this year to have a range of samples of the order of growth. Check these out! It starts with "swollen" (the sunflower seed that had soaked up water but not yet sprouted), "seed coat off" (a bush bean that swelled up and pushed out of it's outer lining), "root growth" (the bush bean having a sprouted root) and "stem with leaves" (a pea that has both a root and a stem with leaves growing). Just some cool "science-ie" things I thought I'd share....

And now for something completely different....

Happy April Fools' Day!!! I got my class good with a "test" that, if you followed the directions, should not have been filled in. Then, after their real reading test, I gave a word search that only had 4 of the words listed in it. They read "you" "have" "been" and "pranked." I am posting pics below- sorry if they're a little hard to see and read. It was funny though - especially for the kids that read the directions on the test!! April Fools test April Fools word search
